Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, or “TMJD”, also referred to as TMJ, is a common condition with symptoms of clicking or popping of the jaw, frequent headaches, ringing in the ears, dizziness, difficulty smiling or swallowing. The American Academy of Orofacial Pain estimates that 3 out 4 people in the United States have some form of TMJD.

Diagnosis and Treatment

How do I know if I have TMJD?

A primary care clinician including practitioners in general medicine, dentistry, otolaryngology, rheumatology, and chronic pain management will diagnose TMJD based upon presentation, history, physical examination, and radiographic findings. Once TMJD is diagnosed your medical practitioner may deem physical therapy appropriate for the management of your condition and refer to Andersen Physical Therapy for further evaluation and treatment.

Can TMJD be cured?

The majority of TMJD cases cannot be cured due to the fact that it is often a cyclic disorder. However, with the correct treatment and lifestyle modifications patients can enjoy healthy lives without limited function or pain.
